To Whom Shall We Go?

Simon Peter replied, “Master, to whom shall we go? You alone have the words that give eternal life, and we believe them and know you are the holy Son of God.” John 6:68-69

Recently Steve and I moved and for the past few weeks I’ve been getting acquainted with my new living space. Unpacking boxes and arranging household items to make home feel like home and then trying to remember where I put things have been a point of laughter for me and my hubby. When I was packing our final load there were a few important items that I wanted to go with me in my car. Reason being is that I didn’t want them to get packed away. I wanted them close at hand and quickly accessible. What were these items? My bible and bible study tools i.e pen, highlighter and study bible with great notes. Now that I’ve answered the “what” you might be wondering why? However circumstances unfold on any given day or whatever season of life I’m in be it celebratory or downright stressful, I cannot be without God’s word speaking into my daily life.

In the last twelve months we have been consumed with a global pandemic and the pandemonium that has followed. Like you, I’ve observed the various reactions of believers and non- believers, scientists and doctors. In the midst of this, the politicians on both sides have voiced their beliefs in an attempt to help the general pubic get a grip on the situation. With that said, I’m seeing and increasing number of folks being swept into the tide of every word that comes from the media. As followers of Christ I must ask, “what has happened to our biblical bearings?”

In John chapter 6, Jesus feeds thousands of people who had been following Him. He does this by miraculously dividing the contents of a small lunch, leaving more left over than He had to begin with. At first, the crowd is amazed and they enthusiastically praise Jesus. After sending the disciples across the Sea of Galilee, and rescuing them from a storm by walking on the water, Jesus once again addresses the crowd. This time, He emphasizes the spiritual lesson behind His prior miracle. In response, most of those who had been praising Jesus turn away from Him in disappointment. Jesus asks the disciples if they were also going to leave. Peter responded, “to whom shall we go?”

In Psalm 119 we have before us a man who bound himself to God and His word. Listen to vv. 92-93.

If Your Law had not been my delight,
Then I would have perished in my misery.
I will never forget Your precepts,
For by them You have revived me (kept me alive).

It was Charles Spurgeon who said, Many are inclined towards temporary religion, but this godly man was bound for eternity. He would perform the statutes of the Lord and King even to the end.

Ladies, Jesus declared in John 14:6 “I am the Way, and the Truth and Life.” When there are so many voices clamoring for our attention and a sea of opinions that are tossing us here and there, let us fix (fasten, securely place, and settle) our eyes on Jesus. He is the Word that was in the beginning (John 1:1-2) and in Him only will we find life sustaining, soul transforming truth. To whom shall we go, He alone has the words of eternal life.
