Will To Be Still

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;  I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord Almighty is with us the God of Jacob is our fortress. Ps 46:10-11

It’s so hard to be still! At this age in my life I’m finding that the busyness of life can keep me on the go just as much as ever. Have you ever wondered why silence, solitude and stillness is not something you naturally gravitate toward? It’s great when you experience it for a few moments or even when you’re on a weekend getaway. You feel so refreshed, and your perspective is restored. You tell yourself that you must do this more often. But soon you’re right back in the day in and day out of life with all of its hurried demands.

God tells us in His word to“be still”. There’s a reason that God commands us to be still but this is where the enemy of our souls keeps us looking in every other direction. The very thing that is most vital to our biblical perspective and the way we go through life as followers of Christ, is the very thing that Satan is going to attempt lure us away from.

Here is where we have the oldest trick in the book, it’s just been re-packed and updated. Blatant sin is not always the thing that the enemy uses. If he can keep us just busy enough (even with good things) it’s just a matter of time before our outlook on life subtly starts to shift. When we begin to lose our vital connection with the eternal, the temporal will crowd out all that is necessary to thrive in our relationship with Jesus. The downward spiral is already at work.

We must will to be still, it won’t just happen. When I get out of bed in the morning my mind is already running on the treadmill of what I have to get done. The only way I can overcome those first few minutes of mental hurry that can quickly get me busy for the rest of the day, is to recognize what’s happening and firmly plant myself and sit with my bible. I too must will to be still because I have recognized my utter need to be washed and renewed by the word of God and prayer.

Listen to what God say’s after He tells us to be still.“And know that I am God!” Oh how you and I as women of God need to be in the place of stillness to be reminded that He is God. We need this reminder in our marriages, we need this reminder in our singleness, we need this reminder in our sufferings and we need this reminder as we live in this world period. It’s so easy to lose sight of all that is true and righteous and eternal. The magnitude of the cross and what Jesus did for our souls can be overshadowed faster than we realize if we neglect all that is necessary for life and godliness by meditating on the Almighty.

Truth be told, I have just come through a period of mental garbage, and my actions were reflecting ever bit of it. The Holy Spirit opened my eyes to own what was happening. As soon as I opened God’s word, the repenting and restoring process began and peace flooded my heart. My perspective changed in just moments and my eyes where once again heavenward. God’s blessing awaits us in the stillness!
