My soul waits in silence for God only; from Him is my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken. Ps 62:1-2
It’s always a sad reality when disappointment comes knocking at our door. From the time of our childhood and into our adult life, we will experience our share of circumstances that don’t meet up to our expectations.
Perhaps there was a job that seemed so promising, or a relationship that you hoped would fulfill all your longings. Maybe it was the graduate degree that you were sure would secure your sense of accomplishment, or the hard-earned pursuit of financial security.
As Christians we know that our foundation is built upon the Rock of Jesus Christ! But what happens when someone in the church disappoints us? What is our response when a christian friend, brother, sister or even a prominent leader fails to meet up to our notions of Christianity?
I recently heard the response of someone who was disappointed by a leader in the church say, “We must talk out the hurt, anger and betrayal. Although I am all too familiar with these feelings myself, I realized immediately that such reactions need to be brought to God’s word and the foot of the Cross.
Throughout the word of God we have instance after instance, scenario after scenario in which we discover that human flesh is marred by failure. It began in Genesis 3 and has worked its way through out all humanity since.
Because God shares His glory and goodness with no one, He reveals in His word that even the most godly men in scripture whether in a large degree or small degree shared one thing in common, their flesh!
When we study the scriptures inevitably we are led to the Cross. This is why Jesus Christ came to this earth. It was only by Him the One who knew no sin, who took upon Himself our sin so that we would be made righteous through Him. 2 Cor 5:21
No flesh can live up to God’s holy standard only Jesus did! Our faith was never meant to rest in ourselves Ps 71:5, 146:5. As long as we renew our minds in that truth, disappointment does not have to devastate our faith. Sadness yes, but despair must be met with the declaration of scriptures.
I’m also reminded about disappointment on another level. When I have my finger pointing at disappointment in someone else I’m reminded that I have three fingers pointing back at me. How many times have I disappointed the Lord and not lived up to my own standard, let alone His?
At the foot of the Cross reality is confirmed and hope is restored! We must all remember that life will be full of discouraging realities but this is our opportunity to renew the unshakable truth of Ps 62:1-2.
Let us take life for what it is, temporal and far from perfect. Heaven is not here, but we long for it and will not be disappointed with its realities once we are there!
Let’s also be sure to let our faith along with this earthly journey be fixed, founded and firm in our Savior.
Are you dealing with disappointment?
1. Quiet your mind before God Is 26:3 Ps 94:19
2. Renew your mind in His word Eph 4:23
3. Forgive as you have been forgiven Col 3:13
4. Keep running the race Heb 12:1-2 Jesus is worth it all!
