A mighty fortress is our God. Those words remind us that no matter what season of life we walk through, God stands strong. He never fails. The story of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1 gives us a beautiful look at how God works through hardship and how He shapes our lives for His plan.
Hannah’s Pain and God’s Purpose
The book of 1 Samuel opens with a woman in deep sorrow. Hannah wanted a child more than anything, but her womb was closed. Her husband loved her deeply, but he didn’t understand her pain. To make matters worse, Hannah’s rival, Peninnah, mocked her year after year.
It’s easy to feel like life is unfair when we face problems that seem impossible to fix. Yet even when God seems silent, He’s never still. Hannah’s pain had a purpose. Her heartbreak led her to the feet of God.
Scripture says, “In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly” (1 Samuel 1:10). When she poured out her soul, she didn’t just ask for a child—she promised to give that child back to God. That act of surrender became the turning point. Hannah’s pain wasn’t wasted, but was the soil where faith grew.
Seeing God’s Purpose in Our Pain
Sometimes, like Hannah, we think life is about us—our dreams, our timing, our comfort. But when we open Scripture, we see that every story fits into a much bigger one—God’s story. We may be small pieces in His plan, but our faith and obedience ripple into eternity.
Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.” That means even in the middle of heartbreak, disappointment, or waiting, God is weaving something greater.
Hannah didn’t know that her prayer would bring forth Samuel, the prophet who would anoint David, through whose line Jesus would be born. Her promise to God reached through generations. That’s the beauty of God’s purpose in our pain—He uses what hurts us most to bring forth His greatest glory.
When Prayer Turns to Praise
When Hannah gave birth, she could have broken her vow. She could have said, “Lord, I can’t give him up.” But she didn’t. She brought her son to the temple and said, “For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition… so now I give him to the Lord” (1 Samuel 1:27–28).
What faith! What courage! Hannah learned that real joy comes when we release what we love most into God’s hands. Her next step wasn’t sorrow—it was praise. In 1 Samuel 2:1, she prayed, “My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high.”
That’s what happens when we trust God fully. Pain turns into purpose. Sorrow becomes strength. Our story becomes part of His glory.
Finding Hope in Your Story
Maybe today, you’re waiting for an answer like Hannah. Maybe you’ve cried until you have no more words. Know this: God sees you. He hasn’t forgotten you. The same God who remembered Hannah remembers you too.
Keep praying. Keep trusting. Let your pain lead you to the One who turns ashes into beauty. When you look back, you’ll see that nothing was wasted—every tear, every delay, every “no” had a reason.
God is still writing your story, and just like Hannah’s, it’s part of something greater than you can imagine.
Even in our hardest moments, God’s purpose in our pain reminds us that He is faithful. Like Hannah, when we surrender our desires to Him, we discover peace, purpose, and praise that never fade.
