Are any of you like me, you’re thinking about Thanksgiving but realizing that things are going to be a little different? I love tradition and I’m a firm believer that traditions whether cheesy and silly or spiritual and more substantial, they play a significant role between families and friends.
A recipe like grandma’s red Jell-O filled with (canned) fruit cocktail and nuts and don’t forget the Cool Whip. Or how about the package of Brown and Serve rolls that we delicately pull apart and smother with butter. Maybe the T.V is blaring in the background with a football game while other voices in the next room are shouting “that’s not a word” over a fierce game of Scrabble. Scenario’s like these somehow bind us together and make for impressionable memories in the midst of life’s insanities.
This Thanksgiving 2020, we are ending the year looking behind at the many challenges that we’ve tried our best to navigate. We’ve prayed, we’ve looked to the Lord, and we’ve trusted His word! We have found ourselves rallying to God’s throne of grace, to give us His wisdom on how to handle each of our uncertain days. Our lives have been shaken by the drama in our nation.
But, I’m grateful for this Thanksgiving, and here’s why God is still God! I have chosen to go vertical with my eyes and my thoughts in this season. As I look up, I’m reminded once again that the Lord has been faithful in every one of His attributes.
God Is Still Infinite! – He is Self-Existing, without Origin “And he is before all things, and in him, all things hold together” (Col 1:17) “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure” (Ps 147:5).
God Is Still Immutable! – He Never Changes
“I the Lord do not change! So, you the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.” (Mal 3:6).
God is Still Omnipotent! – He Is All-Powerful
“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” (Ps 33:6). “Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens above—what can you do? They are deeper than the depths below—what can you know? (Job 11:7-8)
God governs everything with divine goodness that surpasses our often flawed, finite understanding. Despite the rulers or the powers that be, God is on the throne. It is He who made us and not we ourselves (Ps 100:3)
God is Still Omniscient!
“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please” (Is 46:9-10).
God knows everything and He can be everywhere, at the same time. And He never sleeps or slumbers, He’s aware every moment of every day, exactly what the day will bring. He knows our way and is always with us.
I have listed a tiny fraction of God’s attributes. But will you choose with me this Thanksgiving, to be grateful and meditate on His grace, goodness, and love? Things may be a little different this year but let’s ask God to help us to go vertical, and to fill our hearts with His praise!
