You reveal the path of life to me; in Your presence is abundant joy; in Your right hand are eternal pleasures. Psalm 16:11
Since adopting our dog last spring, I’ve been blasted with email’s and advertizements about pet care. Just this morning something caught my attention. Whatever I need to help my sweet little seventy pound doggy live life happy and healthy, is just a click away. Here were some of the categories for every pet owner’s 411. “Pest Infestation”, “Stop Scratching”, “Prevent Infection”, “Boost Vitality” and “Relieve Irritation”. I don’t know about you but to me it sounds strangly similar to what we humans often deal with. How many products do we have in our medicine chest to help relieve itching, irritation and the common cold? What about those vitamins to help boost the vitality we once had in high school? The point is, when it comes to whatever ails us or our pets, all we need to do is click the appropriate category on our computer screen and the product can be on our doorstep by morning!
I think it’s safe to say we’re all grateful for online ordering, overnight shipping, and the many other conveneinces of our twenty first century. We also have much easier access to things pertaining to our walk with God. We can have daily devotions delivered to our email and have access to hundreds of sermons and commentaries in seconds. Without question millions are being reached with the truth of God’s word and I for one am thankful.
It’s no doubt that modern science and technology have made life so much easier than even fifty years ago. At the same time it leads me to wonder if our greatest need isn’t being smothered out by all that we can obtain so easily at our fingertips? Instead of seeking an intimacy with our infinite God, our first instinct is to head straight to the fastest source that awaits us to meet our need just a click away.
David was a man who had it all. Riches, military victories, beautiful women and children were just some of Davids earthly attainments. The folks who were on the outside looking in most likely envied David because of his great successes and material blessings. Until we read the Psalms, we too might believe that he was a man satisfied with life and lacked nothing. But that wasn’t the case. The Psalms that David penned were written through seasons of blessings and betrayals, tears and triumphs, sorrows and songs. Yet, it was in such seasons where he discovered that His true need could only be met in Jehovah his God.
How much of our lives as Christian women is being lived imagining a different life, not the one we have? A life where all our needs and longings will be put to rest and we’ll experience lasting peace.
Women of God, let’s see in this verse a blessed truth for the here and now! Let’s discover that this promise can become our nearest and dearest reality this side of heaven. This life is the life God has given us. Jesus stands beside us ready to be all we truly need all the journey long.
